If your tuning kit isn't activating or connecting to your bike, don't worry - most issues can be resolved with a few simple checks.
VOLspeed V2 for Bosch Performance Line CX Rim Magnet (p/n 1405)
If you have the VOLspeed V2 for Bosch Performance Line CX Rim Magnet, start here. Most activation problems with this kit come from how it has been fitted, including installs done by bike shops.
Step 1: Check the kit is mounted correctly
The chip must be fitted the right way up & mounted in the correct position. If it's fitted upside down or not in its position, it will not activate.
We've seen this happen even with professional installs, and turning the chip over fixed it straight away.
Example of correct mounting on Gen5 CX motor:

Example of incorrect mounting on Gen5 CX motor:

As you can see the label sticker is visible here, it should be facing the motor instead.
While you have access to the motor, also check that:
- The kit is fitted with the correct clamp supplied for your motor
- If possible routed the battery cable on the opposite side to the tuning kit. If this is not possible, keep the battery cable routed as far away from the volspeed as you can
- The rim magnet is securely attached to the rear wheel rim
- All connectors are pushed fully together
If you're unsure, re-watch the install video for your kit in our VOLspeed install guides and compare it with your bike.
Step 2: Activate the kit
-
Switch your bike on and select Turbo mode
-
Lift the rear wheel off the ground and turn the pedals until the speedometer shows 20 km/h (12 mph) or more
-
Stop pedalling and apply the brake so the speedometer to returns to zero
-
Press - + - + - on your controller (minus, plus x2)
-
The display should change to 32 km/h (20 mph), or your preset max speed up to 45 km/h (28 mph)
-
To increase or decrease your preset max speed. Use the +/- buttons to adjust it up or down (the maximum is 28mph). Once you reach your target speed, count to 5 seconds and the chip will store this value and the display will revert to 0.0mph
-
Your volspeed is now active with it's preset max speed applied
Tip: press the buttons at a steady pace. Pressing too slowly is a common reason the sequence isn't recognised.
Additional tip: some bikes require the activation sequence to be pressed 4x. If your chip is still not activating try this. Press - + - + - + - + (minus, plus x4)
Step 3: Still not activating?
Get in touch and include:
- Photos of the kit fitted to the motor, showing which way up the chip is mounted
- A short video of you trying to activate it (pressing - + - + on the controller)
- Your bike make, model and year
- Your bike's drive unit software version (shown in the Bosch eBike Flow app)
Best Practices:
- Once your chip is activated and working correctly, avoid future software updates. We cannot guarantee that the chip will support all future updates
- Activate your chip before you start your ride, not during
- If you do jumps & expert terrain, check on the installation periodically to ensure it has not been displaced
- These tuning kits are not 100% guaranteed against errors, they can happen. If you do experience a speed manipulation error, you can reset this yourself. This can be done by riding the bike with the power on but assistance level set to OFF. This can take up to 90 minutes, after this time the error should clear
- If you experience multiple errors, assess your riding style and type of terrain. Consistently riding at the max speed limit in the highest power mode will increase the chances of triggering an error code
